Overview

Drowning is breathing impairment from being in or under liquid. A person may still need medical care even after they cough, breathe, or appear to recover.

Safe Rescue

  • Do not enter unsafe water unless trained and equipped.
  • Use reach, throw, or row methods where possible.
  • Remove the person from the water as soon as it is safe.
  • Protect yourself and bystanders from becoming additional casualties.

First Aid

  • Follow DRSABCD.
  • Call 000.
  • Open the airway and check breathing.
  • If not breathing normally, start CPR and use an AED as soon as available.
  • Rescue breaths may be especially important after drowning; follow your training.
  • If unconscious and breathing normally, place the person in the recovery position.
  • Keep the person warm and monitor closely.

Medical Assessment

All drowning events need medical assessment, even if the person seems to recover. Breathing problems can develop later after water exposure.
