Guideline Sources

Australian first aid practice is guided by ARC/ANZCOR resuscitation guidance, recognised clinical bodies and workplace health and safety requirements.

Source What It Supports
ARC/ANZCOR guidelines Resuscitation, AED use and emergency response priorities
Code of Practice First Aid in the Workplace First aid risk assessment, kit access and workplace planning
Workplace procedures Site-specific hazards, reporting and escalation

Infection Control

Use standard precautions before providing care:

  • Perform hand hygiene where possible
  • Wear gloves and use resuscitation barrier devices when available
  • Avoid contact with blood and body fluids
  • Dispose of contaminated waste according to workplace procedure

Currency and Equipment

First aid arrangements must stay ready for use. Check that:

  • First aid qualifications and refresher training remain current
  • Kits are accessible, stocked and within expiry dates
  • AEDs are checked, charged and ready according to the manufacturer and site process
  • Local procedures are known before an incident occurs

Working Safely

Before helping, check for danger and reduce risk where you can. Do not enter an unsafe scene; call 000 and wait for specialist help if the hazard cannot be controlled.
