Overview

A sharps injury is a cut or puncture from a needle, lancet, scalpel, or other sharp item. It may expose the first aider to blood-borne infection, including hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or HIV.

First Aid

  • Stay calm and stop the activity safely.
  • Do not squeeze, suck, or scrub the wound aggressively.
  • Wash the area thoroughly with soap and running water.
  • Cover with a clean dressing.
  • Report the incident according to workplace procedure.
  • Seek medical advice promptly for blood-borne virus risk assessment and follow-up.

Disposal

Used sharps must go into a rigid, puncture-resistant sharps container as soon as possible.

  • Do not place sharps in ordinary rubbish.
  • Do not recap or bend needles.
  • Do not overfill the sharps container.
  • Keep other people away from contaminated items until they are made safe.
