What Shock Means

Shock is inadequate blood flow to the body's organs and tissues. It can follow bleeding, burns, allergic reaction, major injury or serious illness.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Pale, cool or clammy skin
  • Rapid pulse or breathing
  • Weakness, dizziness or collapse
  • Anxiety, restlessness or confusion
  • Nausea or thirst

First Aid

Action Detail
Call 000 Shock can worsen quickly
Control bleeding Apply pressure, dressings or a tourniquet if indicated
Position Lie the casualty down if breathing comfortably
Warmth Protect from cold without overheating
Nil by mouth Do not give food, drink or medication

Monitoring

Keep checking response, airway and breathing. Be ready to start CPR if the casualty becomes unresponsive and is not breathing normally.
