Why Head Injuries Matter
Head injuries can affect the brain and may worsen over time. Treat any loss of consciousness, confusion or deteriorating behaviour as serious.
Warning Signs
- Loss of consciousness, even briefly
- Worsening headache or repeated vomiting
- Confusion, drowsiness or unusual behaviour
- Seizure
- Unequal pupils, weakness or poor coordination
- Blood or fluid from the ear or nose after trauma
First Aid
| Priority | Action |
|---|---|
| Airway | Maintain airway and breathing first |
| Movement | Keep the casualty still and avoid unnecessary movement |
| Bleeding | Control bleeding with gentle pressure unless skull injury is suspected |
| Monitoring | Recheck response and breathing regularly |
Vomiting or Airway Risk
If the casualty is vomiting or cannot protect their airway, place them in the recovery position while supporting the head and neck as well as possible.
