Nose Bleed
Table of Contents
First Aid
Most nose bleeds can be managed with position and pressure.
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Sit the casualty upright |
| 2 | Lean them forward so blood drains from the nose |
| 3 | Pinch the soft part below the nasal bone |
| 4 | Hold steady pressure for 10-20 minutes |
| 5 | Encourage quiet breathing through the mouth |
Avoid
- Do not tilt the head back
- Do not pack the nose unless directed by medical care
- Do not keep checking too early, as this can restart bleeding
When to Get Help
Seek medical help if bleeding is heavy, follows major injury, lasts longer than 20 minutes, or the casualty is taking blood-thinning medication.
